Notes:
Dr. James Burd Peale is the brother of Mary Jane Peale. He died unexpectedly in 1881; his wife was pregnant with their fourth child (and fourth daughter), Rebecca Burd Peale Patterson, Pam Roach’s grandmother, and a miniature painter in her own right. The portrait was done from a photograph, which Mary Jane Peale itemizes in one of her lists of paintings that she owned.
