This painting has been attributed to both Rubens and Mary Jane Peale, but most agree that it was painted by Rubens based on the style/technique. A painting itemized in Dr. James Burd Peale’s will, #431, Philadelphia (d. March 2, 1881), is described as “3) Caroline Eliza, … Grapes and peaches by father. …” The family believes this may be the same painting. If it is not this painting, it was likely bequeathed from his sister, Mary Jane Peale, to his widow.
