The painter and engraver Johann-Christian-Jacob Friedrich was born in Friedrichsstadt, Germany, in 1746, the son of the Swiss artist David Friedrich. Johann and his siblings, Alexander and Caroline, trained with their father. Alexander, the eldest, specialized in history painting, while Caroline, the youngest, focused on still-lifes and botanical works. Johann was best known for his landscapes and flower paintings, of which this is a pristine example, demonstrating his restrained and elegant style.
