Small folio (323 x 191mm.), 71 watercolor illustrations on paper, with watermarks including TW 1794, TW 1797, J &M 1818, and Kent 1821, after plates by Donovan, Wood, Swainson, Lewin, Edwards, and others, with manuscript captions in Latin and English, signed “W Goodall,” later maroon half morocco.
Condition: Very good, occasional very light spots.
William Goodall was a natural history artist and priest who lived in Dinton Hall, Buckinghamshire. He produced careful illustrations of animals, birds, and insects from works by Edward Donovan, William Swainson, and William Lewin. He captioned them with their Linnaean name, a Latin description, the plate number of the work they were from, the country, and the genus.
The extensive work of this curious artist stayed in the family line through the beginning of the 20th century when 50 volumes of his drawings came to auction in 1921 and 1926.
