Pieter Withoos was an extraordinary natural history painter who lived in late-seventeenth-century Amsterdam. He mastered the challenging watercolor medium and excelled in painting birds, insects, and flowers with meticulous attention to detail.

Matthias Withoos, Pieter’s father, was a prominent Dutch artist specializing in painting city views, landscapes, portraits, still-lifes, and plants and insects. He spent two years in Rome, gaining widespread recognition for his natural history works, and frequently worked for the renowned Cardinal de Medici. Matthias trained Pieter in painting, and his style of exacting realism was passed down to his talented son. These paintings by Pieter showcase his skill and attention to detail, and they are a testament to his talent as a natural history painter.
