As America's center of the Enlightenment, Philadelphia attracted many skilled European artisans and painters during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Thus it was that the musician Carl Weber and his wife, Eleanore, arrived in the city after emigrating from Darmstadt, Germany. They brought with them their sons, both of whom were artists; the Romantic landscape painter Paul Weber and his younger brother Carl Philip Weber were to both make their careers in Philadelphia.

This evocative landscape is by the younger of the two brothers, Carl, and is imbued with the Romantic philosophies so apparent in the more well known works of Paul Weber. The sublime power of nature, its raw beauty and ability to touch man's deepest emotions is here captured. The luscious rich green tones of the vegetation are beautifully set against the vibrant of the blue sky and white cascading water revealing the influence of Luminism upon Weber’s painting. A work in excellent condition, this is a fine example of the superlative paintings of this Philadelphia artist.
