| While Merian's first concern is with the insects that she portrays, the plates also show the plants upon which they live. These plants are drawn with the same precision as the insects themselves, so that the book is considered an important florilegium as well. Many of her subjects were unknown to European science so that the book has always been considered a scientific landmark, as well as a work of great aesthetic individuality. | |||
