Around 1830, The Barbizon School began to take root in the village of Barbizon near Fontainebleau Forest, France. This small group of naturalist painters combined aspects of Plein-Air painting with Realism (often featuring peasants), resulting in a series of unromanticized and personable natural landscapes. The Impressionist Movement is often noted to have been heavily influenced by Barbizon painters.

Norwegian-born artist Carl Jonnevold immigrated to the United States in the early 1880s, traveling throughout the Northwest until he eventually settled in 1887 in San Francisco, establishing a studio on 1617 California Street. A brief visit to Paris in 1908 introduced the self-taught artist to France's Barbizon School. Jonnevold began to interpret the beauty of Northern California in the Barbizon style, often working during the late afternoon to capture shadows, making a dark and sensuous palette a common characteristic of his work. He was highly prolific, producing hundreds of meadow and tree paintings exhibited in galleries up and down the West Coast. His contemporaries included noted artistic figureheads such as Thomas Eakins, George Inness and Henry Tanner, under the guise of the American Barbizon School.

In Sand Dunes in the Clearing Storm, loose, impressionist strokes are generously applied, capturing the ever-changing nature of the coastal weather. The dark tones of brush contrast with the pale luminescence of sand and gray sky, charging the painting with mood and expression. This exemplary work demonstrates Jonnevold’s masterful use of color and light effects to create an incredibly moving and familiar landscape.
