Jodocus Hondius — America noviter delineata

America noviter delineata America noviter delineata

Published:  Amsterdam  1632
Medium:  Copper-engraving with period color. Remargined, else a very nice example.
Dimensions:  16 1/2" x 22"

A famous early seventeenth century side-panelled map of America. Rare. This is one of the most famous and desirable of all side-panelled maps of America from an early seventeenth century atlas. The map is flanked on both sides by costumed figures of American Indians, and there is a panel of six vignettes of American cities along the upper margin.

This map was originally issues separately at an unknown date (no surviving examples), then was included in Atlas Maioris Appendix of 1630. Both of these versions were surrounded on all four sides by borders of costume figures and town views, but it was discovered that the map was too large for inclusion in the atlas, so the bottom panel of views was removed and the map was reissued with the present format in 1632. All versions have a famous title cartouche at lower right which contains two human skulls.
