| Jane Wells Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden series marks the beginning of the Victorian period of botanical illustration in Britain. While thirty years earlier only the wealthy could afford to own color-plate florilegia, Loudon's age was one in which flower books were aimed at a large, popular audience. Her books were affordable because they were small in format and employed lithography- a less expensive form of printing than engraving. The Ladies' Flower Garden series proved so popular that it was reissued in the 1850's. This popularity is easy to understand, as each plate shows rich coloring, careful attention to detail, and charming composition. | |||
