Oblong 12mo. 7 x 11 inches. Leather-backed cloth boards. 29 landscape pencil drawings, mostly double page. Drawings dated February-April 1894. Many drawings are of Jamaica. Artist signature on front endsheet which has small chip to corner, slightly affecting signature. Front cover detached, back cover slightly loose. Extensive wear and chipping to the spine. Some spotting and staining. Drawings are fine . Charles De Wolf Brownell (1822-1909) was a landscape and still-life artist born in Providence, Rhode Island. He quit his law career in 1853 to pursue landscape painting. He studied in Hartford with Julius Bush and Joseph Ropes. From 1856-1866 he was painting landscapes in Cuba, where his ancestors had previously established sugar and coffee plantations. His visual record of Cuba was possibly the most extensive of an American artist up to that time. After this he turned to painting the New England landscape. He travelled extensively, painting some of the most unique scenery of an American artist of his time. |
