Half-titles. Two fine folding maps of " Louisiana with the course of the Missisipi " and "Louisiana the Gulph of Mexico". Contemporary speckled calf, the spines in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-morocco lettering-pieces in one (extremities slightly worn). First edition in English, first published in French in 1758, but with deletions and additions to the text which the author of the long "Preface", who was also editor of this new edition, makes abundantly clear were to strengthen the British claim to French territories: "This History of Louisiana, was wrote by a planter of sixteen years experience in that country; who had likewise the advantage of being overseer or director of the public plantations, both when they belonged to the company, and afterwards when they fell to the crown The countries here treated of, have not only by right always belonged to Great Britain, but part of them is now acknowledged to it by the former usurpers " This translation was reprinted in 1774.
