Theatrum Orbis Terrarum From the Theatrum Orvis Terrarum Published: Antwerp 1570 Medium: Copper-engraving with full original color Dimensions: 14 1/2" x20" One of the most beautiful and important of all early maps of America The first state of one of the most beautiful and important of all sixteenth century maps of America. This celebrated map was included in the first edition of the Theatrum, and all subsequent editions to 1587. The Theatrum is one of the true landmarks in the history of cartography. It was the first true atlas in the modern sense of the word, (i.e. the first bound volume of maps which attempted to give comprehensive coverage to the entire world, and on a uniform format.) The map’s geography was adapted from the corresponding portion of Mercator’s wall map of the world (1569), and is distinguished by a large bulge on the west coast of South America, which was removed from the map’s second state (15897 and later.) It is beautifully embellished with a large strapwork title cartouche and lovely surrounding floral motifs. Schwartz and Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, plate 32. |
