Don Felipe de Zuniga y Ontiveros, Mexico, 1787. 4to., (7 6/8 x 5 4/8 inches). Engraved portrait of Serra facing page one, folding engraved map at end (very light dampstaining in margins of a few leaves, last leaf remargined). Contemporary limp vellum, title written in manuscript on the front cover and spine, remains of two pairs of ties (extremities a bit scuffed, one or two stains). First Edition, including the map of California. Francisco Palou (died 1789/90) was a disciple of Fray Junipero Serra in Palma de Majorca. They traveled together to Mexico, arriving in 1740 to teach in the Indian missions. Palou sailed in 1744 on the expedition to San Francisco bay, during which the cross was raised on Punta Lobos. After the death of Fray Serra, Palou retired to the Coledio de San Fernando in Mexico and wrote this firsthand account of the famous padre's accomplishments. Wagner deems this volume the "best noted" of all works relating to California. The text is virtually a history of the California missions, and the map by Diego Froncoso includes a dotted line representing the mission trail from Baja to San Francisco (the map is a second state). Palau 210789; Medina 7731; Wagner 168; Sabin 58392; Phillips, p. 184. |
