C. Phillipp Weber - Mountain Landscape with Waterfall |
|
Signed l. l.: C. Weber 1850-1921 Medium: Oil on Canvas Dimensions: 50 x 35.5 inches As the Enlightenment in the New World centered in Philadelphia, the city attracted many skilled European artisans and painters during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It was for this reason the musician Carl Weber and his wife Eleanore arrived in the city after emigrating from Darmstadt, Germany. They brought with them their sons, both of whom were also artists. One was the Romantic landscape painter Paul Weber and the younger, Paul’s brother Carl Philip Weber. Both made their careers in Philadelphia. This evocative landscape by Carl Weber is imbued with the Romantic philosophies of the Enlightenment; the sublime power of nature, its raw beauty and ability to touch man's deepest emotions – both are captured here. The luscious green tones of the vegetation are beautifully set against a vibrant blue sky. The cascading waters points to an influence of Luminism upon the artist at the time. PROVENANCE: Bears a Newman Galleries, Philadelphia label verso |
