Camille Demarçay followed an uncomplicated approach to the subject of flower painting, choosing to show just one variety of bloom in each of her compositions.  The rationale for this was to show the species to the fullest, thus celebrating the beauty of each plant. The stark wood-paneled background provides little distraction to the main subject but instead helps to heighten the colors of the blooms.  The exacting detail of Demarçay’s paintings, combined with the formal arrangement of her compositions reflects the influence of the earlier Northern European style.

Born in Paris, Camille Demarçay studied with Eugenie Hautïer. She specialized in the painting of portraits and flowers and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1869.
